The special session explores a wide variety of Information and Computer Technologies (ICT) for Disaster Management including advances in computer science, big data, human-computer interaction and decision support systems. Machine learning (ML) is getting a lot of attention at the moment. This is partly because a slew of new companies are emerging which are using it in innovative ways and partly because it can get easily subsumed into the fuss and furor about AI and the rise of robotic and visual intelligence. Being the branch of science and technology, electronics makes the use of the controlled motion of electrons through different media and vacuum. Most electronic devices today use semiconductor components to perform electron control. The study of semiconductor devices and related technology is considered a branch of physics, whereas the design and construction of electronic circuits to solve practical problems come under electronics engineering. Design is process of describing, organizing, and structuring system components at architectural and detailed design. Electronic system level (ESL) design and verification is an emerging electronic design methodology that focuses primarily on the higher abstraction level concerns. Professor Rao Vemuri joined UC Davis faculty in 1986 and held a joint appointment with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory until he retired in 2012. While at LLNL he worked on the use of neural network methods for detecting clandestine underground nuclear explosions, the use of genetic algorithms in assembling DNA restriction fragments in the Human Genome Project, use of Bayesian nets in solving inverse problems while searching the WWW. Prior to his current position he taught at SUNY, Binghamton and Purdue University, West Lafayette. He also worked at TRW, Redondo Beach on such projects as the Hubble Space Telescope and the MX Missile. He was a Fulbright Lecturer in India during 2010. As a faculty facilitator in IUCEE (Indo-US Collaboration for Engineering Education) he visited India several times and conducted short courses. He visited Vietnam twice to teach courses in AI, Machine Learning and Mobile Computing at the University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam under a US Faculty Grant from the Vietnam Education Foundation. He spent one month as a visiting professor at Lund University, Sweden and taught several short courses in Mexico as an IEEE/ACM Distinguished Lecturer. He also served on the editorial boards of several journals and had been the Editor-in-Chief of CS Press. He had been the founder/CEO of Smartifacts, LLC in 2002 and is now a consultant to several companies.

Aim and Scope of Session

Today sensors technologies are gaining popularity, with people surrounded by many sensor devices. Low power sensing devices, pushed by the wave of Internet of Things (IoT), are becoming increasingly complex systems that combine hardware, microcontrollers, sensors, memory, energy, and data storage, software, firmware, and connectivity in a myriad of ways. As these devices are typically supplied by batteries one of the main challenges faced from industrial and academic researcher are to prolong the operating lifetime of the sensing platform and enhancing usability, maintenance, and mobility while keeping a small and unobtrusive form factor. Low power design aims to build power efficient sensing systems to provide continuous data monitoring, acquisition, processing, and classification of the data. However continuous operation using only ultra-small batteries poses unique challenges and many hardware software technologies/methods/algorithm need to collaborative employed to extend the lifetime or even make them self-sustaining .The session would be devoted to application of various methodologies of power conversion and management, design and fabrication of novel transducers and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systm) devices, autonomous sensors. These Special Issue emphasizes the challenges, issues, and opportunities in the research, design, and engineering of energy efficient sensing, focusing on techniques, strategies, and algorithms applied to real-application achieving long lifetime.
